Everybody dreams of having a family. At the end of the day, we all wish we have people to go home to. Celebrities are no different. During the earlier times, it was shameful to even think about surrogacy or pregnancy through any other way. Today, looking at the advancements of women in the 21st Century, it is no longer necessary for a woman to give birth naturally or at a very young age. Now that women have been focused on their career, they want to give birth at a later age. When women opt for pregnancy at a later age, more often than not, they come across complications. But with the advancements in science, women can now opt for other options unabashedly.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
In the Intrauterine Insemination process, a woman can work with a partner, donor, or a sperm bank to get the sperm sample. This sample is then introduced to the woman’s uterus via her vagina or cervix. Once the woman is inseminated, the regular nine-month process of pregnancy continues. This method is helpful for women who want to be single mothers.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Many couples struggle to get pregnant. IVF is a process where the couple can experience a regular pregnancy after one small procedure. In the in vitro fertilization process, the woman’s eggs are collected and combined with the sperm in a lab. Once the infusion of the sperm and eggs result in an embryo, it is placed back into the woman’s uterus. After this procedure, the regular nine-month process of pregnancy continues.

While many can adopt, some parents want their children to be their biological children too. Sometimes a woman’s body is not capable of holding a child in the womb for nine months. That is when the couple can opt for surrogacy. In this procedure, another woman carries the couple’s baby. This is made possible when the endocrinologist uses the IVF method to place the embryo into a surrogate’s uterus.

These procedures are sometimes thought of as shameful or illegitimate. But there is no truth to that. Instead, it is just another way of expanding your family.Celebrities like Ekta Kapoor and Neetu Ambani have also chosen different ways to start a family. Last week, Ekta Kapoor welcomed her new-born, Ravie, via surrogacy while Isha Ambani recently revealed that her twin brother, Akash Ambani and she were IVF babies. Other celebrities who have opted for other options instead of regular pregnancies are:

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan

Amir Khan and Kiran Rao

Karan Johar

Sohail Khan and Seema Khan

Tusshar Kapoor

Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder

Seeing how Bollywood celebrities have made a bold choice for their family, they have generalized this taboo. There is no disgrace or embarrassment in choosing different ways to expand your family. Looking at how the Indian public worships celebrities and follows the new trends brought to the country by them, it is now evident that the public is accepting various methods of fertilization.

While India has legalized surrogacy, it still comes with restrictions. As of December 2018, the Indian law requires couples to be infertile and married for 5 years to opt for surrogacy while single parents, homosexuals and live-in couples are banned from this option. Even while single parents are banned from the option of surrogacy, celebrities like Karan Johar, Tusshar Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor have welcomed children via surrogacy. Being a celebrity could have given them a free pass after all.

In September 2018, India was filled with pride when the government legalized same-sex marriage, and now we wonder why they don’t have the option of surrogacy like any other heterosexual marriage.

What do you think…

Is it right for homosexual couples to be banned from surrogacy and lose one of their chances to expand their family?

Do you think India is shying away from making a bold choice for their families?
