Was India Snubbed at the 2019 Emmys?

The entire nation of India was excited when they found out that India was nominated three times in the 2019 International Emmy Awards. Sacred Games Season 1, Lust Stories and Radhika Apte (Best Actress) were nominated for the Emmys.

The 2019 Emmy ceremony took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles where the world witnessed Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and Bill Hader (Barry) take home the top prizes while The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, too, took home a bunch of awards.

However, when the 2019 Emmys were aired and the nominations were called out, none of the Indian nominations were called out.  This is because the International Emmys, where Sacred Games and Lust Stories are nominated, are part of a different ceremony altogether. This international event will take place today in New York where the winners will be announced.

This means that the main ceremony, which was concluded two days ago, it in itself doesn’t have a category for international content. For any show to qualify for Prime time Emmys, the show should have aired on American television within the eligibility window, which for the past years, is from June 1 to May 31.

The shows that air on Netflix, Amazon Prime or any other streaming devices, have special Emmy guidelines. These guidelines say that programs are eligible for nomination if they were originally aired by broadband to markets representing at least 50% or more of U.S. households.

Which means, today’s the day India will know if India bags any wins in the 2019 International Awards!
